I have my own relationship with clutter and delayed decisions. Its something I have been working on for years.Over my clutter journey  I have realized that maintaining a home free of clutter is something most people struggle with. It takes some time and deliberate thinking. It is not rocket science but it doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. The great thing is that the steps for decluttering are the same no matter where you start! No matter if  it’s a closet, a drawer, or even a glove box. By breaking the process down into simple, bite-sized manageable steps, you can transform your space into a home you truly love, just like I have. Let’s explore my seven essential tips for decluttering any area of your home!

1. Plan ahead where to start

Choose a small, manageable area to kick things off. Starting with a single drawer or a single shelf can help build momentum. Decluttering an entire house might feel overwhelming, but breaking it into bite-sized chunks will keep you motivated.

2. Take everything out of the drawer. EVERYTHING. This allows you to really see what you have and also you will be able to give the drawer a good wipe-down.

3. Categorize Your Things

Sort items into categories—like clothes, books, kitchen utensils, or papers. This helps you see what you have too much of and what might be missing. Grouping similar items together makes decision-making easier.

Pro tip: Are there things here you have been looking for? Like that screwdriver? Put them away where they belong. In this case, put that screwdriver in your tool box.

4. Choose What to Keep

Ask yourself, “Do I love it? Do I use it? Does it serve a purpose?” If the answer to all three is no, it’s time to let it go. Be honest with yourself about what truly adds value to your life. Remember, less is more.

5. Eliminate What You Don’t Need

Once you’ve decided what to keep, focus on removing everything else. Items that are broken, unused, or no longer needed should be set aside for disposal or redistribution. If it’s not serving you, it’s just taking up space.

6. Sell, Donate, or Toss

Decide how to handle the items you’re parting with. Sell items in good condition to earn a little extra cash. Donate them to someone in need, or a charity shop but keep in mind this rule: If you would not buy it in its condition, then it is not donatable, Dispose broken or unusable items responsibly. By thoughtfully rehoming your items, you can declutter while helping others.

7. Savor the space and Calm

Take a moment to enjoy your decluttered space. The effort you put in has not only transformed your home but also your mindset. A clean, organized space promotes peace, productivity, and happiness. Maintain the habit by regularly revisiting areas to prevent clutter from building up again. Adopt the habit: Don’t put it down, put it AWAY.

Decluttering your home doesn’t have to be a daunting task. With these seven steps, you can simplify the process and enjoy a home that feels lighter, calmer, and more intentional. Start small, stay consistent, and remember: every step you take brings you closer to a clutter-free life.
